Union Glashütte Averin Chronograph Sachsen Classic 2026: A Racing-Livery Square Chronograph, Limited to 350 for EUR 3,700

For the 23rd Sachsen Classic rally, Union Glashütte dresses its 41mm square Averin Chronograph in 1970s–80s racing livery — tile-embossed dashboard dial, red accents, perforated racing strap — with the silicon-hairspring UNG-27.S2 inside. 350 numbered pieces, EUR 3,700.

Description

Union Glashütte has unveiled the Averin Chronograph Limited Edition Sachsen Classic 2026, the official watch of the 23rd Sachsen Classic rally running through Saxony on 14–15 August 2026. The German manufacture shifts this year's rally tribute from the round Noramis to its most distinctive case — the square Averin — and dresses it in a livery straight out of 1970s and 80s touring-car racing: a technical tile-embossed dial, bold red accents, and a perforated racing strap. It is limited to 350 numbered pieces at EUR 3,700.

The Averin has been Union Glashütte's angular alternative since 2008, and the current generation leans hard into automotive design language. The Sachsen Classic edition is the sharpest expression of it yet — a dashboard for the wrist, from a brand whose home town of Glashütte sits in the very region the rally crosses.

Design

The stainless steel case keeps the regular Averin Chronograph geometry — 41 × 41mm, 15.45mm thick, 49.47mm lug-to-lug — with a double-sided anti-reflective sapphire crystal domed at the corners, echoing the flowing glasshouse of a classic coupé. The dial's embossed tile pattern evokes technical racing surfaces and gives real depth under the domed crystal, while the chronograph layout reads like a cockpit instrument cluster, punctuated with red details. Two quick-change straps are supplied: bright red rubber with a textured, performance-interior feel, and grey perforated leather with red lining recalling classic driving gloves and sports steering wheels.

What's Exciting

Square chronographs are a one-watch category in most minds — the Monaco — and at EUR 3,700 the Averin undercuts TAG Heuer's icon by thousands while bringing things the Monaco does not have at any price in its standard range: a silicon hairspring and a 65-hour reserve from the upgraded UNG-27.S2. The Valjoux 7750 base is no secret and no shame here; Union Glashütte's value has always been honest Glashütte execution of proven mechanics. For a rally watch, the details land: the tile dial genuinely reads as a dashboard, and the perforated-leather-plus-red-rubber strap pairing is the rare motorsport gesture that doesn't feel like a sticker pack.

History

Union Glashütte was founded in 1893 by Johannes Dürrstein in Glashütte, Saxony — the cradle of German watchmaking — and today operates within the Swatch Group as the accessible face of the town's tradition. The Averin, introduced in 2008, gave the brand its square-cased identity. The Sachsen Classic rally partnership is a long-standing one: for years the tribute editions were built on the round Noramis chronograph, and moving the 2026 edition onto the Averin marks a deliberate sharpening of the brand's motorsport line, timed to the rally's 23rd running through the brand's own home region.
