History

Citizen was founded in 1918 in Tokyo, with the name chosen by the mayor of Tokyo to reflect watches accessible to all citizens of the world. In 1976, Citizen introduced the world's first analog solar-powered watch, originally marketed as "Crystron Solar Cell." The technology was rebranded "Eco-Drive" in 1995, converting any light source into energy stored in a rechargeable cell, eliminating battery replacements. Over five decades, Eco-Drive evolved from a novel concept into Citizen's core technology, powering everything from dress watches to 1,000m divers.
