Description

Panerai has taken the most recognisable silhouette in its catalogue — the 44mm Luminor Marina with its crown-protecting bridge — and rebuilt it entirely in Carbotech, the brand's proprietary carbon composite. Announced on 3 August 2026, the PAM01707 pairs a decidedly modern case material with a deliberately old-school face: no date, small seconds at 9 o'clock, and warm beige Super-LumiNova that mimics decades of tritium patina. At EUR 15,200, it slots in as the lightest way into a full-size Luminor Marina.

The headline number is the weight. Despite measuring 44mm across and 14.5mm thick, the whole watch comes in at roughly 100 grams — lighter than titanium, let alone steel — because the case, bezel and the signature crown guard are all Carbotech, with only the closed caseback and buckle in DLC-coated titanium. Water resistance is a proper 300 metres, so the tool-watch brief remains intact.

Design

Carbotech is made by compressing thin layers of carbon fibre with PEEK, a high-performance polymer, and the layering leaves every case with its own marbled, ebony-like grain — no two PAM01707s look alike. The matte-black case frames a matte-black sandwich dial in classic Panerai fashion: cut-out baton and Arabic markers reveal a lume layer beneath, here in a warm beige that glows green in the dark. The small seconds register at 9 o'clock is a nod to the military originals, where it served as a running indicator for combat divers. The watch ships on a brown vintage-style calfskin strap with beige stitching, plus a spare black rubber strap; a single DLC-titanium trapezoidal pin buckle swaps between them with the supplied screwdriver.

What's Exciting

Plenty of brands do faux-patina reissues, and plenty do carbon cases — the trick here is doing both at once without the result feeling confused. The PAM01707 is essentially the 1950s military Luminor formula (sandwich dial, small seconds, no date, crown bridge) executed in the most 2026 material Panerai owns, and the weight transforms how a 44mm Luminor wears: 100 grams on the wrist is territory usually reserved for much smaller watches. Add the fact that the Carbotech layering makes every single case visually unique, and the P.9010's independently jumping hour hand for travel, and this is one of the most coherent material plays Panerai has made in years.

History

The Luminor case shape dates to the 1950s, when Panerai supplied instrument watches to the Italian Navy's commando divers, and the bridge-guarded crown remains one of the most protected design signatures in watchmaking. Carbotech itself debuted in 2015 on the Luminor Submersible 1950 Carbotech, and Panerai has been steadily widening its advanced-materials range ever since — most recently alongside the Submersible line's DMLS-printed titanium experiments. The PAM01707 brings that programme back to the collection's heart: the standard-bearer 44mm Luminor Marina.
