Description
Ten years after Finnish watchmaker Torsti Laine set up his atelier in the Canton of Neuchâtel, Laine Watches is celebrating with the smallest and arguably most charming watch it has ever made. The new P33 is a 33mm hand-wound dress watch in the spirit of the 1930s and 1940s, built around the atelier's signature craft: dials cut by hand on a manually operated engine-turning machine. It arrives alongside five new dial variants of the established 37mm P37, released as a numbered anniversary edition of 99 pieces.
Laine occupies a special place among independents: rather than manufacturing movements from scratch, the atelier takes proven hand-wound bases and elevates them with decoration of a standard rarely seen anywhere near this price — hand-turned guilloché, black-polished steel bridges, and hand-finished internal angles. The P37 is priced at CHF 9,900 excl. taxes; the P33 is “price on request”, expected between CHF 10,000 and 12,000.
Design
The P33's polished steel case measures just 33mm across, 8mm thick and 41mm lug-to-lug — a deliberately restrained wrist presence. Its silver dial carries two different hand-cut guilloché patterns on one surface, framed by concave, domed hour markers polished by hand to a mirror finish, and read by polished, domed, heat-blued syringe-style hands cut from a 0.2mm steel plate. Sapphire crystals front and back reveal a rose-gold-coloured movement with a hand-turned guilloché bridge and two black-polished steel bridges.
The five new P37 dials each pair a colour with a distinct pattern and marker style: “Taivas” in sky blue with a twill-weave pattern and white gold Breguet-style numerals; “Tulli” in salmon with a lightning “Spider” pattern and heat-blued hands; “Meri” in grey-blue with a diamond pattern; “Lumi” in silver with an inverted triple grain-de-riz pattern and blued numerals; and “Kaamos” in violet-blue with a modified flame pattern that shifts between blue and purple with the light.

What's Exciting
Genuine hand-guilloché — not stamped, not CNC — normally lives north of CHF 30,000, in Voutilainen and Breguet territory. Laine delivers it, along with black polishing and hand-cut internal angles, at CHF 9,900 by being honest about the movement: the Peseux 7001 base is a workhorse, and every franc saved on manufacturing calibre architecture is spent where your eye actually lands. The P33 pushes that logic further into a 33mm case at a moment when compact dress watches are the most interesting conversation in the industry — and a double-pattern hand-turned dial in this size is something even the big houses do not offer.
History
Torsti Laine came to watchmaking sideways — a computer-science background, then Finland's Kelloseppäkoulu watchmaking school from 2011, the A. Lange & Söhne Watchmaking Excellence Award in 2014, and formative spells in Kari Voutilainen's workshop and Lange's decoration department. He founded Laine Watches in 2016; the atelier has since built its reputation on classical time-only pieces (plus one restored-Valjoux chronograph) distinguished by hand-cut guilloché in patterns from grain de riz to clou de Paris, on Unitas, Peseux and Vaucher micro-rotor bases. The 10th-anniversary P33 and P37 series distil exactly that decade: Finnish restraint, Neuchâtel finishing.
