Description
Citizen has added a limited edition to the Tsuyosa Shore family it launched in February 2026, and this one leans nostalgic. The Tsuyosa Shore Limited Edition NJ0238-57E is themed around what Citizen calls "a journey into the past": a 40mm steel sports automatic whose textured black gradient dial and warm gold-tone accents deliberately evoke the beach watches of decades ago. Limited to 12,000 pieces worldwide at a projected US$495 (£349 in the UK), it lands in August 2026.
The formula that made the Tsuyosa a value favourite is unchanged — integrated-style three-link bracelet, sapphire crystal, an in-house automatic calibre — but the black-and-gold treatment moves it out of the summer-brights territory of the original Shore quartet and into something dressier and more deliberately vintage.
Design
The 40mm stainless steel case carries a black gradient dial with a distinctive textured surface that shifts under light, framed by gold-tone bezel markings and matching applied indices. The sapphire crystal integrates a date magnifier over the 3 o'clock window — a decidedly retro cue — and a transparent caseback shows the Cal. 8210 at work. The three-link metal bracelet is brushed with polished accents, and water resistance is 100m, keeping the Shore's beach-ready brief intact.

What's Exciting
The Tsuyosa has quietly become one of the best value automatics on the market — an in-house movement, sapphire, and an integrated-bracelet look for well under $500, in a segment where Seiko and Orient used to have the field to themselves. The Shore Limited Edition is smart because it doesn't chase hype: the black-and-gold palette plus the date magnifier reads like a 1970s holiday watch without turning into a costume. Twelve thousand pieces is "limited" in the accessible sense — you'll actually be able to buy one — and at US$495 it undercuts nearly every comparable Swiss-badged automatic while offering a movement Citizen builds itself.
History
Citizen, founded in Tokyo in 1918, launched the Tsuyosa (from the Japanese for "strength") as an accessible automatic line that became a sleeper hit of the early 2020s. The Shore sub-collection arrived in February 2026 with four summer colourways — navy, marine blue, moss green and coral red — built around the idea of a sport-ready automatic for the water. This first Shore limited edition arrives in a symbolic year: 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of Citizen's Eco-Drive light-powered technology, first introduced in 1976 — and Citizen is celebrating it, a little ironically, with one of its most charming purely mechanical releases alongside the new Eco-Drive Rainell line.
