Description
Tantalum is one of the most difficult metals in watchmaking — dense, gummy to machine and almost impossible to polish evenly — which is exactly why so few brands use it for a full case, let alone a bracelet. Atelier Wen is one of the exceptions: its original Inflection was billed as the first serially produced watch with a full tantalum bracelet, and the Shuò brings that expertise to a collaboration with Massena LAB. The Inflection Shuò is a 40 mm integrated sports watch whose case and bracelet are made from 99.9% pure tantalum, paired with a solid 18k gold dial finished by hand.
The dial is offered in white gold or rose gold, hand-worked in tremblage by the engraver Coralie Mercier for GT Cadrans, and the movement is a customised Girard-Perregaux GP03300 automatic. The edition totals 50 pieces — 10 in white gold, reserved for established clients, and 40 in rose gold — at CHF 33,800 excluding taxes (US$44,100), with deliveries in small batches from early 2027. Orders opened on 26 August 2026; we are covering it now, in a catch-up cycle, as the wider press has caught up with it.
Design
The case measures 40 mm across, 10.2 mm thick including the crystal and 45 mm lug to lug, and flows directly into the integrated tantalum bracelet, which tapers from 22 mm to 18 mm and closes with a patent-pending clasp offering four positions of micro-adjustment and a quick-release system. Tantalum's naturally dark, blue-grey colour gives the whole piece a gunmetal presence that no steel watch can reproduce.
The dial follows a California-style layout that mixes Arabic numerals with hand-calligraphed Chinese numerals in blue, framed by a huiwen — the traditional Chinese meander — border. The solid gold dial plates are textured by hand with tremblage and the numerals are hand-engraved, so each of the 50 dials is individually made. Through the caseback, the GP03300 has been reworked with curved, wind-inspired bridges, a dark grey ruthenium finish and a 5N rose gold-plated rotor.

What's Exciting
Three things make this interesting. First, the material: a full tantalum case and bracelet remains a rare engineering statement, and one Atelier Wen has made its speciality since the original Inflection. Second, the dial: solid gold, hand tremblage and hand engraving by a named Swiss artisan is haute-horlogerie craft rather than a stamped pattern. Third, the provenance: a China-based brand collaborating as an equal with a respected Western independent on a Swiss-finished watch is a sign of how quickly the centre of creative gravity in watchmaking is widening.
The caveats are real. The movement is a customised Girard-Perregaux base rather than an in-house calibre and CHF 33,800 puts it firmly in independent-luxury territory. But for the metal, the dial craft and a 50-piece run, the price is coherent — and the design is the most distinctive integrated sports watch we have seen this year that does not owe its silhouette to the usual 1970s references.
History
Atelier Wen was founded in 2018 by two Frenchmen, Robin Tallendier and Wilfried Buiron, as a brand that designs and manufactures in China, drawing its visual language from Chinese culture. The Inflection collection, launched in 2025, is its integrated-bracelet line. The founders met William Massena in New York in 2023, and this is the first collaboration between the two.
For Massena LAB — William Massena's collaborative brand, known for partnering with independents on tightly limited pieces — the Inflection Shuò is a set of firsts: its first watch in tantalum, its first integrated-bracelet design and its first collaboration with a Chinese brand.
