Description

The Jacob & Co. Bugatti Tourbillon Sapphire Crystal is the brand's clearest expression to date of "horological hypercar." For Watches & Wonders 2026, the ongoing Jacob & Co. × Bugatti partnership now goes fully transparent, with three unique, sapphire-cased editions of the Bugatti Tourbillon released in lime green, electric blue, and rose gold. Each sapphire case requires roughly 800 hours of grinding and polishing — sapphire cannot be milled like metal, only ground, with most of that time spent on optical-grade finishing.

The watch contains a dial-side sapphire-crystal V16 engine, an automaton driven by its own dedicated mainspring barrel. Press a button in the crown and the V16 "revs" furiously for about 20 seconds, while the watch itself runs for 80 hours. Each barrel — timekeeping and automaton — has its own coaxial retrograde power-reserve indicator, a clear narrative reference to the dual fuel/charge gauges of the actual Bugatti Tourbillon hypercar.

Design

The case is full sapphire crystal — not a sapphire-windowed metal case, but a fully ground, polished, transparent enclosure. The DLC-treated decorative exhaust manifolds flank the central engine block; their pipe colour matches the accent colour of the watch (lime green / electric blue / rose gold). The dial side is dominated by the sapphire V16 engine block, with miniature solid-gold pipes, valves, and barrels surrounding it. Retrograde hour and minute hands jump back over a 270° arc — a callout to the analogue mechanical instrument cluster of the Bugatti Tourbillon hypercar (also produced by Concepto, Jacob & Co.'s movement-making partner). Twin coaxial power-reserve indicators show the remaining charge in each barrel, exactly the way Bugatti's hypercar shows fuel level and battery charge on coaxial dial faces.

Specifications

  • Reference / Model: Bugatti Tourbillon Sapphire Crystal — three unique colourways: Lime Green / Electric Blue / Rose Gold
  • Case: Sapphire crystal (~800 hours of grinding/polishing per case); DLC-treated decorative exhaust manifolds matching the accent colour
  • Caseback: Sapphire — displays the V16 sapphire engine block
  • Movement: Manual-wind, twin coaxial mainspring barrels (one for timekeeping, one for the automaton); manufactured in partnership with Concepto, La Chaux-de-Fonds — the same firm that produced the analogue instrument cluster of the Bugatti Tourbillon hypercar
  • Escapement: Fast 30-second tourbillon (two rotations per minute, instead of the usual one); cage partially in sapphire, ampersand-shaped sub-element
  • Power reserve (timekeeping): ~80 hours
  • Automaton runtime: ~20 seconds per full charge
  • Indications: Retrograde hours and minutes jumping back over a 270° arc; twin coaxial power-reserve indicators
  • Winding system: Both barrels wound via a single crown using grande sonnerie-style winding clicks; automaton triggered by a pusher in the crown
  • Limited edition: 3 unique pieces (one per colourway)
  • Price: US$1,200,000 each

What's Exciting

The integration of the Bugatti hypercar narrative into the watch's mechanical architecture is genuinely thoughtful. Both the car and the watch run only forwards (the Bugatti Tourbillon famously has no reverse gear); both feature prominent V16 architecture; and both use coaxial power/charge indicators on a single dial element. The sapphire case is the technical centrepiece — at three pieces, this becomes one of the most sapphire-intensive serial productions Jacob & Co. has ever executed. The 30-second fast tourbillon (two rotations per minute) is also a genuinely uncommon technical choice; most flying tourbillons in this segment turn at the standard 60-second cadence.

History

Jacob & Co.'s relationship with Bugatti dates to the original Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon released in 2020 — a 16-cylinder W16 automaton tribute to the car of the same name. When Bugatti unveiled its V16-engined Tourbillon hypercar in mid-2024, with an analogue mechanical instrument cluster developed by Swiss watchmaking specialist Concepto, the watch partnership had a new car-shape to follow. The 2026 Bugatti Tourbillon Sapphire Crystal is the most extreme transparent execution of that partnership — and arguably its definitive piece, given the geometric match between the sapphire watch case and the hypercar's analogue gauge cluster (which Concepto built first).
