Description
Ferdinand Berthoud's problem has never been chronometry. It has been wearability. The FB 3SPC has always been a serious chronometer wrapped in precious metal at a weight and a price that made it an occasion watch, and the new FB 3SPC.4-1 is the first version that reads as something else entirely: black ceramised titanium, 42.3 mm across and under 10 mm thick.
This is only the second time the model has appeared in a non-precious case, and the first with a ceramised coating. Nothing has been given up mechanically. The calibre FB-SPC retains the cylindrical hairspring with Berthoud terminal curves, the variable-inertia balance and COSC chronometer certification, and the cylindrical oscillator is still on show through the rectangular sapphire porthole cut into the left flank of the case.
Design
The case is a 57-part construction in black ceramised titanium, 42.3 mm × 9.43 mm, with glareproofed domed sapphire over the dial and over the caseback, plus that third sapphire window on the flank. Crown guards appear on this model line for the first time — a small addition that does a great deal to shift the watch's register from formal to something closer to sporting.
The dial side is architectural rather than decorative: a black varnished brass bezel ring carries grey numerals, and behind it sits a black sandblasted German silver mainplate. A power-reserve indicator sits at 2:30 and small seconds at six o'clock. Movement finishing is new for the line too — vertical brushing replaces the sandblasted textures of earlier references, which took their cue from the gilded movements of Ferdinand and Louis Berthoud. It comes on a black textile strap with a titanium pin buckle; a titanium folding clasp and alternative strap materials are available on request.

What's Exciting
A cylindrical hairspring is the detail worth understanding here. A flat spiral breathes slightly off-centre as it expands and contracts, which introduces positional error that the escapement then has to be regulated around. A cylindrical spring breathes concentrically and largely removes the problem — which is why marine chronometers used them, and why almost nobody uses them now: they are difficult to make, difficult to adjust, and take up vertical space. Berthoud not only fits one but builds the watch so you can watch it work through a window in the side of the case.
Putting that in ceramised titanium at 9.43 mm thick is the actual news. The chronometry was never the obstacle to owning one of these; the weight, the formality and the preciousness were. This is the first FB 3SPC that makes sense as a watch you put on without thinking about it, which for a manufacture that has spent a decade proving it can out-engineer almost anyone is a more useful step forward than another complication would have been.
History
Ferdinand Berthoud, the man, was a Swiss-born horologist who spent his career in Paris and was appointed Horloger Mécanicien du Roi et de la Marine by Louis XVI. His marine chronometers were among the instruments that made accurate determination of longitude at sea practical, and his written work on the subject ran to thousands of pages. He died in 1807; his nephew Louis Berthoud continued the workshop.
The modern Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud was established in 2015 under the Chopard umbrella, with Karl-Friedrich Scheufele as the driving force, and has confined itself to a small number of technically uncompromising chronometers — beginning with the FB 1, which won the Aiguille d'Or at the GPHG in 2016. The FB 3SPC line, with its side-on view of the cylindrical oscillator, is the most legible expression of the house's argument: that the point of a chronometer is to show you why it keeps time, not merely that it does.
